What is a Nerd?

If you have had an internet connection (Which you obviously do if you're reading this) or have entered any Claire's Justice or other "girl" store in the past year or so, you will have noticed that a lot of girls have been just putting on over sized glasses and calling themselves nerds. Saying stuff like, "I'm like, a total nerd and gamer girl, LOL!" This angers me. A LOT. Let me tell you about why.

I have no problem with these girls becoming nerds and gamer girls. The thing is, is that they think that because they bought some "nerd" glasses and play Angry Birds on their iPhone that they are a nerd and a gamer girl. Which is NOT true in the slightest! I don't know who is reading this, but I'm assuming that if you're following my blog, or you like to read it, you're probably at least a little nerdy and annoyed by what these girls do.

The thing is, most people are born nerdy. They find out of their nerdiness early on, or sometimes later, and they embrace it, either by school and math, nerdy t shirts and Doctor Who, nerdy drawings, nerdy comics, or another form of "nerdiness". Some people I am sad to say, squash their nerdiness down. They are so eager to become popular, they squish their smarts and nerdiness down until it is nonexistent. They make sure that they are Dumb Danielles and Stupid Saras. I makes me sad. But then, there is the final group, the people who were born the bad kind of popular, the Barbies if you will. They are the ones who put on the glasses, and call themselves nerds.

The thing is, though it is possible, going from that state of Barbie esq popularity to a nerd is challenging. They need hard work and dedication, which is rarely what these girls are known for. Don't get me wrong! Plenty of Barbies have changed their ways and come to the nerd side, its just that most of them think it would be easier to be popular, and put on a pair of glasses.

To become a nerd, you need to surround yourself with nerdy culture. Throw away the stuff you bought only to be popular. I don't care if its a poster of a hot movie star, the Twilight series, or a giant snow cone machine, if you don't use it, don't want it, and don't know why you got it, then THROW IT OUT. You need to find out what kind of nerd you are. Are you Creative Nerd, Gamer Nerd, Math/Other School Nerd, Book Nerd, Comic Nerd, Doctor Who Nerd, Fangirl Nerd, or other type of nerd. Keep in mind that you can be a mix of these nerds. To find out which one you are, you need to try a few of them. Watch an episode of Doctor Who, see if drawing is your thing, buy a few nerdy t shirts, buy a gaming system/games (I personally recommend PS3 and Portal 2), Go to your comic book shop, read a book that you want to read, and see if any of them strikes your interest. Once you figure it out, the real fun begins.

Now, you get to find out everything you possibly can about your chosen nerd type. Creative Nerds can know everything there is to know about Manga, Gamer Nerds can research the best gaming system, book nerds can look up books and their authors. Keep in mind that many of you will start to feel very excited and might start screaming at all the different events and places there are for people like you, and the people who are famous for your chosen nerd type might become suddenly super amazing and awesome. Keep in mind that this is normal. You are just experiencing "fangirling" which is quite normal for girls who are nerds.  Not all nerds are fangirls, but many are (Like me for instance).

After you've done that, then just have fun! You on the road to nerdiness. Go to an event, visit a bookstore, get an autograph. If you keep at it, the world will have another nerd.

Ok, enough with the self help talk. It is true that you can become a nerd if you were a Barbie, but few do. They just prefer their popularity. They might actually enjoy the things "popular girls" enjoy more than they enjoy nerdy things, and that is FINE. I am glad if there is one more nerd in the world, but if that is not what the person wants, then that is their decision. I am not going to force them to be a nerd. Ok then... looks like I wrote a whole post on nerds. Well, this post is getting WAY too long, so I'm going to sign out. Byeas!!!!
